August 21st 1872

English illustrator, Aubrey Beardsley is born.

Aubrey Beardsley was a Brighton-born illustrator and author whose haunting, black drawings were heavily influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts.

His work emphasised the groteque, the decadent and the erotic.

Before his early death at 26 years of age, Beardsley was already a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement and his work contributed to the development of Art Nouveau.

In homage to this fantastic illustrator we've selected our favourite Pinterest boards dedicated to his work.
