17th December 1945

Tracy Beaker author Jacqueline Wilson is born.

Born in Bath in 1945, Jacqueline Wilson is a hugely popular author known for writing children's novels.

She spent her childhood and student life in Surrey and became a journalist when she was jsut a teenager - writing for Jackie teenage magazine, which was named after her.

Throughout her life she has written many books for children. With her sensitive understanding of modern life for them, the way they live and the problems they encounter, along with her great sense of humour, has made her extrememly popular - particularly with children between the ages of 9 and 11.

In fact Jacqueline Wilson was one of my favourite authors, with her novel Bad Girls being my absolute favourite - I read that book so many times it was completely falling apart. This story in particular dealt with the subject of bullying. depicting the kind of insecurities which young readers can relate.

She has sold over over 10 million books which have been translated into over 30 languages. In 2000, 6 of her books where in the Top 10 bestselling children's paperbacks. Other books include The Story of Tracy Beaker and sequel, The Dare Game, which tell the story of a child who lives in foster care; Double Act which is about identical twins with not so identical personalities; The Illustrated Mum, who has multiple boyfriends and is covered in tattoos; and more recently Candy Floss, where a young girl named Floss has to choose whether to stay with her dad in England or move to Australis with her mum.

Alongside this she has written many books for older readers including Girls in Love, Girls Under Pressure, Girls Out Late and Girls in Tears.

Her books have also been adapted for television including Double Act and The Story of Tracy Beaker.

In 2002, she was awarded an OBE for services to literacy in schools, giving her the title of Dame Jacqueline Wilson.
